Kambo

Kambo medicine

Kambo or “Sapo” known as the “vaccine of the forest” is an ancient Amazonian medicine used in South America.

The frog is native to the Amazon basin and can be found in the rainforest regions of Northern Brazil, Eastern Peru, southeastern Columbia, parts of Venezuela, Bolivia, and the Guianas. It involves the application of the venomous secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor (the giant leaf or monkey frog) to burns created on the skin.

The Legend Of Kambo

Kambo is said to be named after the legendary medicine man Kampu. According to the history of the indigenous tribe of Kaxinawá, several members of their tribe suddenly became ill one day. The shaman of their tribe, Kampu, tried every herb, elixir, and ritual to heal his people. After many days of no progress, Kampu journeyed deep into the Amazon jungle and was guided to go under the influence of Ayahuasca for answers.

The spirit of Ayahuasca revealed to him how to speak, capture, and extract the white waxy secretion of the giant monkey frog. Ayahuasca then showed Kampu how to apply the secretion to skin burns on the top layer of the skin. When Kampu returned to his tribe with new hope and knowledge, he followed the instruction from Ayahuasca and all his brothers and sisters were healed.

Since then, it has been long used by indigenous Pano-speaking tribes in the Amazon, including the Katukina, Ashákina, Yaminawá, and the Matsés. Ancient Mayans may have also used the “sapo” as their art depicted tree frogs next to mushrooms.

Receiving the Medicine of Kambo from the Jungle

The frogs are not harmed in the process of collecting the secretion. The natives believed that to harm the frog would bring bad luck. The secretion can only come from the wild-caught frogs living in the Amazonian jungle. Frogs in captivity cannot produce the peptide secretions. Some speculate that the frogs’ natural diet may play a role in the secretion production.

Frogs are captured at night, tied by the legs, and harmlessly stressed to induce the secretion. The secretion comes out as a waxy substance, and is scraped onto wooden splinters, dried, and stored for use. The frog is then released into the wild, unharmed.

Can You Feel the Calling of the Frog Spirit Medicine?

The frog spirit medicine calls to people who are simply not taking care of themselves the way they should. Sometimes this relates to diet, exercise and lifestyle. In other cases, it may relate to a relationship on which you’re spending too much energy with little return. In both cases, it’s time for a change. Kambo frog medicine brings us into a deeper connection with our feelings, perspectives and our ability to purge negativity from our lives, be that “dis-ease” spiritual, mental or physical.

If you hear Kambo calling, it may be coaxing you toward a physical or emotional cleansing. Detox, cry until you find peace. Look for a mantra or chant aimed at purification and healing, so you can sing with Frog back to wholeness, and come join us at our next Kambo ceremony!

Reverence For Kambo

What a blessing that the medicine Grace offers comes directly from the Peruvian medicine holders of the Matsés tribe. The Matsés collect the secretion from the frog by hand and afterwards carefully place the frogs back in the same tree in which they were found, never harvesting the same area of the jungle more than once each year.

Working with the Matsés Partners, The Kambo Frog Detox Foundation is bridging the gap between western science and ecological preservation and Amazonian shamanism. The first ever Frog Farm is being created in Peru, which will help protect the Monkey Tree Frog (Phyllomeduysa bicolor_ during its most vulnerable states (egg and tadpole phases). The frogs are then released once they are fully grown and able to fend off predators for themselves. It is important to note that when fully grown, the frog's secretion protects it from all manner of predators, except a rare venomous snake and a kind of fire ant, both of which are extremely poisonous.

History of Kambo

The practice of Kambo dates back at least 2000 years and was first widely reported on in the West in 1986 by the neuroscience researcher and journalist Peter Gorman, who was spending time with the Matsés tribe since 1979. Gorman initially reported that the Matsés would use Kambo secretion before embarking on multiple day hunting trips. The Kambo frog secretion treatment allegedly gave them increased stamina, visual acuity, hearing ability, and a reduced need for food and water while minimizing their own human scent. It is also believed that hunters emit a strange green light that draws their prey near. They would also use it to cure various illnesses, giving it to the women and children in their village when in need.

It has traditionally been used to eliminate toxins, increasing strength, and stamina, monitoring pregnancy or inducing abortion, and dispersing “panema,” a dark cloud of energy and negative thoughts surrounding a person’s aura. This dark cloud is carried around in the energy body and is a result of traumas, heavy emotions, ancestral patterns, and bad luck that are weighing a person down, causing them to feel overburdened and emotionally heavy.

The Sacred Medicine of Kambo

Kambo is a powerful medicine and needs to be treated and handled with respect. The wild frogs are captured and then harmlessly stressed to induce the secretion. Once the secretion has been obtained, the frog is released unharmed. The Spirit of Kambo works with our higher self and guides us to focus and realign all aspects of our character that are not in balance. Wholeness is the key to enlightenment and well-being.

Indigenous tribes believe that the spirit of Kampu lives on in the giant monkey frog, continuing to heal any who seek the medicine. Honoring and treating the frog and its medicine with respect ensures the energy contained within the medicine is clean and healing.

Kambo is a wise and loyal spirit. While Kambo is not a conventional approach to healing, you will be greatly rewarded for building and cultivating a relationship with its spirit or essence. Some say 50% of the work is done by Kambo and the rest is up to YOU. Schedule a discovery call with Grace to start your journey with Kambo today.
